The scientific studies of Georgian grapevine varieties have begun since the middle of the 19th century. In the 1870s, characteristics of the Georgian grapevine varieties appeared for the first time in the catalogues published in Paris and London. Today, more than 500 Georgian domesticated vine varieties are recorded in Georgia, out of which about 430 are preserved in various state and private collection vineyards. Georgia's diverse natural conditions create an ideal environment for grapes with the best qualities that are prerequisites for the production of unparalleled Georgian wines.
