Georgians have been engaged in viticulture and winemaking since ancient times. Throughout centuries a rich culture of grapevine and wine has been developed and a diversity of grapevine species has emerged. The domestication of wild grapevine was followed by the establishment of vineyard plantation and maintenance systems, the latter always being done with great care and awe. At the same time, the wine vessels were improved, and Kakhetian and Imeretian winemaking technologies were developed. The wine has become one of the bases for the Georgian nation's economic well-being.
